Frequently Ask Questions

What is the difference between Lune tiles and clay tiles (terracotta)?

Terracotta tiles made up of clay materials which is not heat resistance or heat reflective by nature. For our changed climatic we need to adopt new technologies that enable us to live better. The terracotta tiles can work with nominal temperature but in the tropical regions like India and metro cities like Chennai the raise in temperature is quite high than other places. Our cool roof tiles are manufactured using naturally occurring minerals which have inherent nature of heat resistance and high sun light reflectance. This properties results in reducing the heat decapitates into the roof wall. When comparing the clay roof tiles and Lune white roof tiles, white roof tiles are best in heat resistance, high durability in nature.

  LUNE TILES Clay Tiles
A White colour Red (dark)colour
B Hard bounded by trending technology Light bounded due to burn
C Made with natural minerals with white cement bounded Made with clay
D Less water absorption More water absorption
E More sun light reflectivity due to MgO composite Less reflectivity due to dark colour
F Very hard bounded and insoluble Burnt. Have a chance for mixing half burnt
G Just slope by Grano flooring Need Weathering course

Can cooling tiles be installed on a floor with clay tiles?

As per requirement it can be installed in three different ways as per advice of engineer.

1. Cooling tiles can be installed above the red tile if your house's foundation is good and free from rain water leakage as per engineer advice.

2. If there is any doubt in building’s foundation, only the red clay tiles above the weathering course can be removed and if the weathering course is good, cooling tiles can be installed.

3. In case of rainwater leakage or weathering course is spared while removing red clay tiles, remove old tiles and weathering course completely up to mother roof and cut 8 inches from bottom to top of handle wall and apply the cement mix a little enough to hide the brick. After applying the compound and cleaning thoroughly, apply two waterproof coatings. After at least 15 days of water retention and ensuring that there is no leakage, the rainwater drain should be set up and the mixture should be spread over it and then the cooling tiles should be installed.

Generally, the engineers are advised to remove completely up to the mother roof (old tiles, weathering course, or rainwater sloping) and to applying two waterproof coatings and then after at least 15 days of water retention and ensuring that there is no leakage. Then after making sloping only, the mixture is ready to spread for laying tiles.

A weathering course is required for clay tiles only by which spreading the brick gravel and lime across the terrace. There are currently no people available to fix it properly. Weathering course is not necessary to install the cooling tiles. Chips concrete only where more than one inch thickness of mix is required for rainwater drainage. (Grano Flooring) should be set up. Lune cooling tiles can reduce the weight of the roof, saving money and time compared to red tiles. Therefore, there is no need to use a separate weathering course for cooling tiles.

Many clients enquire. Can we add cooling tiles now that we've already installed a weathering course? The material can be spread and the cooling tiles can be lay if there are no flaws, when the weathering course is well and good without any water seepages. The combination of cement milk, and grout material has to have an adequate amount of water-proof liquid added. Because there is already a weathering channel in place for rainfall drainage, concrete chips are not needed.

A. Cool Roof Tiles helps to reflect the heat and prevent the heat from entering the home through the roof, helps in maintaining normal humidity levels.

B. Also cooling tiles can reduce weight in the overall process by avoiding weathering course.

C. Also the cool roof tiles saves money, by avoiding the weathering course and only in need of grano flooring. So the cost of installing Lune cooling tiles will definitely be reduced by at least 10 rupees per square feet as compared to red tiles. This can be compared by using Calculator. This reduces the roof overburden and saves money and time in various ways.

Points to be observed while installing cooling tiles are

A. The box should be stacked vertically on the terrace in the same way as the tiles are dropped vertically from the vehicle.

B. After making waterproof coating and ensuring that there is no water leakage, the laying work should be started.

C. Tiles should be laid in break joint method using 8mm spacer.

D. Every day after laying the tiles, the surface should be cured with water in the morning and evening.

E. The next day after laying the tiles, keep walk on the tiles without shoes to ensure the fixation of tiles. If u see any tiles without proper fixing removed it and re-install properly.

F. Mainly, waterproof compound should be mixed as required in the grout material as a semi-solid texture like paint to make sure to fill the gaps of the tiles.

A. When shifting and stacking, Lune tiles should be placed vertically only and not on the bed frame. Perhaps it is keep in horizontal manner, the tiles in the below boxes are more likely to be damaged.

B. Tiles should not be installed without waterproof coating for Lune tiles. Perhaps there is nothing more frustrating than installing tiles without waterproofing and having seepage in future. So it is very good to make cool roof tiles with waterproof coating.

C. Similarly, cooling tiles should not be installed without gaps. Leave a gap of at least 5 to 8mm using spacer. If the gap is 2 or 3 mm, the grout will not completely fill the gap between the tiles, which may lead to cracks like gravel later in the day.

D. Avoid walking on cool roof tiles immediately after installation until the tiles are set. Because, when the tiles are not gripped in the cement mixture, the vibrations caused by our weight may fluctuate and affect the uniform structure.

E. It is better to dissolve the grout material into semi solid form and add waterproof compound to it.

Cut 9 inches from the bottom to the top of the parapet wall, apply a small amount of cement mixture to hide the brick. After cleaning well, apply two waterproof coatings (Horizontal and Vertical) and make sure that there is no water leakage for at least 15 days by keeping water. Then only make sloping for rainwater draining and finally fix the cooling tiles. Adequate amount of waterproof liquid should be added to cement mix mortar and cement milk.

After removing all up to mother roof and Cut 9 inches from the bottom to the top of the parapet wall, apply a small amount of cement mixture to hide the brick. If there is no leakage, the old tiles can be removed up to the weathering course and check the condition of underlying weathering course. The cement mix mortar can be spread over it and the cooling tiles can be installed. Adequate amount of waterproof liquid should be added to filling base mix and cement paste.

Many people question that generally 2mm, 3mm gap would be good to see. But inside the house, there will be no problem installing it in a straight line with a 2mm, 3mm gap or without gap in the floor. The reason is that there is no chance of sunlight coming inside the house and no one washes with water nowadays and usually we use the mop to clean the house.

But it is not like that in the terrace, because the terrace meets various natural conditions like rain and sun. By leaving a gap of 8mm and filling of grout material gives a good grip to the tiles. It also avoids cracking and chipping of the tiles in the future.

Before installing our Lune tiles, we must make a waterproof coating to stop the water leakage, lay a grano flooring, spread the mixture on it, leave 8mm gap and install the Lune cooling tiles in the break joint method.

Many of our customers ask this question. When laying normal floor tiles inside the house, they can be installed in a straight line. An arrangement that is straight like a chessboard is called a straight line.

Break joint means the tiles in the first row should be laid as full tiles.

For the second row, a tile should be cut into two halves and only one half of the tile should be laid first and then the full tiles should be laid continuously in that row.

In this method of laying is break joint. This makes it easier to set up the sloping. Also, if there is an unexpected explosion in any of the tiles, the continuation of the explosion will be prevented by using alternate motion.

This is a question that many customers ask us. When a gap of 5-8 mm is left between one tile and another tile, it is difficult to fill the gap completely when filling the gap with grouting material in a paste form. 15 mm thick tiles should be filled with grout from top to bottom by the labours. Even if there are 1mm hollows from the top by mistake during grouting, it is likely to develop a hairline crack or a gravel root like crack when we walk on it. Therefore, when grouting is dissolved and filled with grout, grouting material is filled to the full capacity of 15mm between the tiles and gives good bonding. Therefore, it is better to dissolve the grouting material in the pulp and add the required amount of waterproof compound to it.

People think that, if a rainwater drainage pipe is installed in the front yard of the house, it will spoil the elevation. So the rainwater drainage pipe is installed on the backside. For example, on a 1000 square feet terrace, all the water that falls during the rainy season will run on one side and the rainwater that reaches a drainage pipe will not drain quickly. It can accumulate on the terrace and eventually cause damage like seepage in the building. Therefore, when the long side of the terrace is partially split into half and in opposite directions, the sloping can be made and more than one rainwater drainage pipe is installed. This can prevent rainwater from accumulating and leaking. Also, by setting up more than one rainwater drain pipe (Rain Water Drain Pipe) according to the area and setting up the drainage, due to the reduction in the number of construction materials (Filling material Quantity), the overload of the surface can be reduced and the money can be saved up to 15%.

Some customers ask that 20mm thickness is more cooling and 15mm thickness cooling tiles give less cooling. There is no such thing. The reason is that we lay cooling tiles mainly to avoid unnecessary overload on the terrace.

Comparing Lune Tiles, for example, 10*10 inch 15mm thickness one tile weighs 2.1 kg, for example, 1500 tiles per 1000 square feet (including skirting tiles) weighs almost 3100 kg (3.1 TON).

If the same 12*12 inch 20mm thickness tiles are laid, the weight of one tile is 4.300 kg and its overall weight will be up to 4.3 tons. An increase in weight is an unnecessary burden.

10 inch X 10 inch 15 mm cooling tiles are better than 12 inch X 12 inch 20 mm heavy tiles in reducing unnecessary load due to approximately 1300 kg (1.3 TON). Therefore, it is better to reduce the overall weight of the terrace of the house by laying quality Lune cooling tiles of 15mm.

When the tile boxes are placed ground floor below, they are placed vertically. Even when it is taken to the terrace, it should be stacked in the same manner. For example, if you place four to five boxes in a horizontal manner, the lower tile box is more likely to break due to the gravity of the tile box above it.

Hairline cracks are likely to occur even if grouting material is filled in tiles without proper care. Most importantly, when the gap is less than 2mm or 3mm, hairline crack is likely to occur without proper filling of the grout material, so if you leave a gap of 8mm and fill the grout material with waterproof compound, it will be good for a long time without hairline crack.

Many customers ask Lune Tiles are shiny to look whether it will make us slip? Lune tiles are definitely not slippery when it rains or when cleaning the terrace. It is not slippery like ceramic tiles. Not a single customer has ever complained that the Lune Tiles were slippery. Our Lune Cool Roof Tiles are manufactured for terrace purposes only and are non-slip under any conditions.

A roof garden can be set up on the floor with Lune cool roof tiles. It is a special pleasure to be in harmony with nature. Plants, vines, and trees are the beauty of home and country. Lune cool roof tiles are installed with five layers of protection, i.e. two waterproof coatings are applied before installing cooling tiles, waterproof oil is added to the laying mixture, cement milk, and grouting, hence the building is protected as five walls, water leakage is prevented. So without any fear due to the installation of cooling tiles roof garden can be set.

Our government is encouraging terrace gardens in various ways. Therefore, today terrace garden is very necessary for our living environment. Everyone is a farmer by creating a terrace.

Some customers ask whether the Lune tiles should be dipped in water before laying. There is nothing wrong with or without wet.

Cooling tiles should not be installed or temporarily placed over Asbestos sheet. Because the asbestos sheet has 6 mm thickness only. It is not strong enough to bear the weight of cooling tiles and cannot be installed. So we should not install cooling tiles on top of Asbestos sheet.

Also, the World Health Organization has recommended the prohibition of asbestos sheet as it causes many diseases such as lung cancer, larynx and ovarian cancer by continuing to breathe the hot gas that is released due to heat shock.

White color is likely to be easily stained by dirt. Usually, we didn't clean the terrace every day like the interior of our house. So if there is dirt on the cooling tiles floor, use White Cement and White Powder as appropriate for the area. For example, for 500 square feet, mix 5 kg of White Cement and 5 kg of river sand or white powder with 30 litres of water and sprinkle over the tiles and finally scrub with a broom. By doing this, you will get 70 to 80 percent of the white color that you got on the first day.

And in some places, if the grout filled in the 8mm gap of the tiles is gone, it can be repaired by this method. This method of maintenance made every 2 years can reduce staining on the tiles.

Even during small celebrations like birthday parties, cleaning and maintenance in this way help control the indoor heating of the house by reflecting the heat of the sun without transmitting it.

In general, one thing can be mentioned on the terrace from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm during peak sun hours, the heat reflects on the tiles and mixes with the air.

When we go for a long drive on the national highway, we see mirages. A mirage is when the sun shines over a straight tarmac road in summer like a pool of water. Similarly, heat from the surface of the tiles on the terrace is likely to squint as it reflects and mixes with the air.

Don't think of this as a negative. Because controlling the internal heat of the house is considered very important, cool roof tiles are installed.

By laying cooling tiles on the terrace of our house, the heat of the sun is reflected in the summer and the interior of the house maintains a normal temperature.

Similarly, during cold seasons, or rainy seasons, will it be very cold? Many customers ask how...

As well as blocking the summer sun, in any season of monsoon, summer or winter, the cooling tiles laid in the house prevent the cold caused by the external climate through the roof and control it and maintain the normal temperature inside the house.

When installing cooling tiles on the terrace, you should leave a regular space between the tiles. We emphasize this to all customers. That is, many people ask with the thought that "it will be beautiful to see if it is posted without a gap".

“Why not install without a gap”?
Usually, none of us clean the house with water, we are usually done with a mop. There is no sunlight coming into the house. So we can lay tiles in the straight joint method even without gaps inside our houses. But when the terrace is exposed to various conditions like rain and summer. The cooling tiles must come for the long term without having any problems such as water leakage, and maintenance of the tiles. So at least 5mm to 8mm space give between each tile. Also, the grouting material has to be filled in those spaces with paint-like consistency.

As far as the terrace is concerned, it is a must to apply a waterproof coating before sticking the cooling tiles. Any cooling tiles should not be laid without a waterproof coating.

For example, an engineer has been buying tiles from us for many years. He has bought and laid cooling tiles from us for more than 10 sites. They have had no problems, no waterproof coating on any of them, and no leakage problems.

But in the 11th building, there is a water leakage problem. The builder enquired us why there is a water leakage problem, and we also inspected the building. We analysed why this problem of water leakage occurs only in this one building which did not exist in the already built 10 sites. The reason behind this problem is they didn't do waterproof coating even though we insisted on that. Because we do not let our customers be affected by such an experience due to wrong guidance or thinking that laying of cooling tiles will solve the problem of water leakage. Before laying, the waterproof coating must be done to prevent water leakage, the Grano floor should be laid on aid, the mixture should be spread on it and the cooling tiles should be installed in the break joint method leaving a gap of 8mm. Any cooling tiles are only for reflecting the heat and controlling the internal heating of the house.

A terrace with red tiles allows the sunlight to absorb through the roof and pass through the weathering course and give more heat to the house during peak hours. But in Cool roof tiles, the heat is reflected and it prevents the heat from entering the house through the roof and maintains a normal climate. For example, comparing an A/C with a temperature of 23°C in both a red-tiled room and a Lune cooling tiled room of equal area, it takes approximately 12-15 minutes to reach a target of 23°C and it also retains the coolness even after switching off the A/C. But in a red-tiled room, the A/C needs to run continuously to retain the coolness. So Lune tiles save us electricity

Customers frequently inquire us why Lune Cool Roof Tiles are only available in white. Any colour other than white is more likely to absorb heat. That is why we use naturally existing white minerals and cooling materials to create our Lune Tiles in the white colour.

Many customers ask if laying cooling tiles on the terrace will provide cooling like AC in summer. Basically, cooling tiles do not act as air coolers, or air conditioners (A/C).

Placing it on the terrace of our house reflects the heat of the sun without transmitting it and reduces the internal heat of the house.

Also, when compared with red tiles, Lune tiles maintain a more natural atmosphere and provide a relaxing atmosphere. Climate impact is controlled by the white roof in all-weather i.e. rains, winters, and summers.
